In order for us to achieve our goals, it is vital that we have a clear understanding of those we are trying to help. Data collection is one of the most productive means of gaining this understanding. Here are some of the instruments we have used to collect data. Here are some of the data we have collected in the past.
Surveys, Questionnaires,
Research Evaluations,
& Statistics
We frequently groan when we hear these words. Why?
Because they mean more papers to fill out & questions to answer in our already busy schedules. What is the reason for all these? What do they do for me?
I can now answer these questions. I have had the privilege of being a Data Collector for the Show Me Kids Project in Southwest Missouri and have gained the insight of what surveys, questionnaires and research evaluations can impact. When we take the time to complete surveys we are giving researchers the information they need to affect how our children receive services; we help provide information that shows what types of services work best for our kids which can be helpful when agencies are trying to get funding to provide these services to our kids.
If the statistics don't make sense, ask for them to be explained so that they do. We don't have to be researchers to understand the information. I have learned to always ask if it doesn't make sense to me and expect someone to help me understand.
So, when asked to participate in research, remember your voice can and does make a difference because our information is important.
